Just Tomatoes

Finally, after so long, I've decided to write once more. This time there's no recipe unless you consider my favorite sandwich..TOMATO, MAYO and SOFT WHITE BREAD...a recipe. I've got to say there's nothing like as long as the tomato tastes like a tomato and not the hot-house it was grown or stored in.

Tomatoes are either good or not good, there's no two ways around it. I can't understand why, either. It's like roses...either they smell good or they don't have any fragrance whatsoever. WTF! Tomatoes should taste good and roses should smell good. End of discussion, right? I guess not because the vast majority of grocery store tomatoes have no taste and the roses in floral arrangements have no fragrance...and we, as the public, accept that.

Well, I don't. I don't buy tomatoes at the grocery store unless I have to and then I usually just get one or two to sample it. If it has the slightly sweet, slightly acidic, juicy taste that a good tomato should have, I go back and get more. But, I've got to tell you that lately, I haven't gone back very much. I've discovered grape tomatoes and Campari tomatoes and folks, that flavor is what I grew up with. Yummy! Why do people continue to buy sub-par tomatoes and pay ridiculously exorbitant prices for "specialty" tomatoes when they all should taste just as good. Do people not have taste buds?

Now, back to my favorite sandwich. A tomato sandwich is heaven on earth if you have the right tomato. I just had one with some cheddar cheese on it too and if I could have 20 of them it wouldn't be enough. The cheese was creamy and the tomatoes were sweet (they were Campari tomatoes that were on sale.) The bread was soft and gooey and the mayo was my favorite..Kraft! I put a little salt on the tomatoes to bring out the delicousness and Wow! That's a sandwich to be proud of. It even leaves a yummy aftertaste in my mouth that lingers even 30 minutes after eating. A little wine would be nice with this sandwich too, but I was having it for brunch so I didn't think I should drink wine and besides...I don't have any!

I believe we should quit buying tasteless tomatoes unless we plan to heave a few at bad actors or something. Maybe then, the growers would understand that we DO have taste buds and we're not going to eat tasteless tomatoes anymore!
